The Connecticut Valley Historical Museum, Springfield, Mass., possesses among the Pynchon Papers, seven account books, 1651-1694, which document many transactions of John Pynchon over a large territory when he was the principal merchant in western New England. Among the customers were John Ponder ( -1712), John Holyoke (1642- ), and Thomas Copley ( -1712). Pynchon dealt with individuals in such towns as Hartford, Conn., and Westfield, Windsor, Northampton, and Dorchester, Mass.
